Our DARK Chocolate Layers!
The Black Copper Marans are one of our favorite breeds to work with here on the farm! Our foundation breeding stock came out of Greenfire Farms, Little Peddler, and Bev Davis lines, and later we added some Sage Acres birds to our breeding program which has given us some gorgeous copper hackles on the hens, and those AMAZING dark dark eggs we all love!
As breeders, we focus on hardiness, friendliness, and dark chocolate-brown egg color, when selecting who to keep as breeders and which eggs to hatch, all while keeping the standard of the Marans breed in mind. All of our Marans have feathered legs down through their outside toe. This is the French Standard, as well as the American Standard for this breed.
The Black Copper Marans are a large-bodied bird, which lends them to being great winter layers as well. We get Marans eggs straight through to spring here, in slightly reduced numbers. They are very friendly and come running for treats when they see us outside. Even the roosters are gentle and kind, and are always on the lookout to the sky above to keep their girls safe (we have a lot of hawks here!). At any sign of danger, they herd all the ladies into the coop for safety. It is an amazing thing to watch. I just love love love our Marans boys!
We are Proud Members of the Marans Chicken Club USA. They are an excellent resource if you would like to learn more about this wonderful breed!
